Frequently asked questions

The most asked questions about the shop, orders, shipping and Sauternes.

The shop

Can I visit the shop and taste before buying online?

Yes, that is the best way: 2 Rue Principale, 33210 Sauternes, open every day, 10am–6pm.

Does the website show everything available in the shop?

Not necessarily — online stock and shop stock are not synced in real time. Write to the shop to confirm a precise availability.

Can I taste before buying in the shop?

Yes, tasting in the shop is free.

Your orders

How does an order on the website work?

You choose your bottles on the website, you confirm the order, then the Sauternes shop prepares the shipment. Card payment online is not open yet: the order is completed by phone or at the counter.

Which payment methods do you accept?

In the shop, bank cards are accepted. Online payment (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay) is not activated yet.

Can I cancel or change my order?

Yes: contact the shop quickly. Until the order has been shipped, it can be cancelled or adjusted, including a refund.

Do I have a right of withdrawal?

Yes, as with any online purchase in the EU: 14 days, provided the bottle is unopened.

Can I give a bottle as a gift?

There is no automated gift wrap for now. Write to the shop: a note can be added to the order.

Shipping

Where do you deliver?

The shop ships to mainland France, Corsica, and the European Union. No French overseas territories and no destinations outside the EU.

What are the delivery times?

In mainland France, allow about 2 to 5 working days after dispatch; to Corsica and the European Union, 3 to 7 working days depending on the carrier.

What is the shipping cost?

Shipping cost is calculated automatically at payment, according to parcel weight and destination (mainland France, Corsica or the EU).

Do I need to be present for delivery?

The sale of alcohol is regulated: an age check (18+) is required at delivery. Exact procedures depend on the carrier.

Can I track my order?

A tracking number will be emailed once the order is shipped, when the carrier is connected. Until then, the shop confirms dispatch by phone or email.

Sauternes

How should I store a bottle of Sauternes?

A bottle of Sauternes should be stored away from light, around 12–14 °C, lying down. Sauternes ages very well, often for several decades.

Once opened, how long does a bottle of Sauternes keep?

An opened bottle of Sauternes keeps for several days in the fridge, recorked: sugar and acidity preserve it better than a dry wine.

At what temperature should Sauternes be served?

Sauternes should be served cool, around 6–8 °C.

What does Sauternes pair with?

Sauternes pairs classically with foie gras, but also with blue cheese, a yellow-fruit dessert, or spiced dishes.

Why is Sauternes more expensive than a classic white wine?

Sauternes is more expensive than a classic white wine because yields are very low: little juice per bunch, and successive hand picks.

Is Sauternes only a dessert wine?

No: Sauternes also belongs at the aperitif, with blue cheese or foie gras.

What is the difference between Sauternes and Barsac?

Barsac has its own AOC but may also be labelled Sauternes; the styles are close, with Barsac often a little fresher.
